Have you heard people talk about generational curses and wonder what they are talking about? It sounds like something out of the dark ages or a sci-fi movie. But generational curses weaved all through the Bible as patterns that follow families.
A good example of this is when Sarah lied to God about laughing when God told her she would bear a son in her old age. Then Abraham lied about Sarah being his wife instead of telling King Abimelech that she was his sister. This lied could have disrupted God’s plan for Abraham being the father of many nations. God intervened and gave the king a dream to warn him not to take Sarah as his wife.
Abraham and Sarah had a son, Issac. Issac had two sons, Esau and Jacob. Jacob lied to receive the first son’s blessing from his father Isaac. Jacob got the blessing but had to leave his family because of Esau’s anger. This led Jacob to leave and go live with his mother’s brother Laban. Laban accepted Jacob but deceived him repeatedly about working for Laban’s daughter Rachel. Laban switches out his oldest daughter for Rachel at the wedding. I am not sure how that could happen, but I am sure there was drinking involved. Jacob had to work another seven years for Rachel. Laban switch Jacob’s wages over and over. But God used all this deception to break off the patterns of lying in this family line that open the door for God’s enemy to steal, kill, and destroy.
Stolen Identities!
We think these are just stories in the Bible that have nothing to do with our lives. Not true! Missteps or sins like accidents or murder can alter a family or person’s identity. Satan’s goal is to steal, kill, and destroy God’s people. He does this by confusing their identity. Here is how generational curses work in our lives.
Trauma or sin can open the door to fears, anger, and a victim mentality. It can change a whole family line identity. How can this happen? Someone in your family causes a car wreck. If someone is crippled or killed in that wreck, it could shift your family’s destiny to “the family who killed that person.” The family who had their member killed or crippled identity could shift to that of a victim or anger wanting vengeance.
Sin affects us and those around us. This is one of the ways a curse works in our bloodline. These mindsets of victims or distrust get passed down to one generation to the next. Many times, people will not even be aware that this mindset is wrong. An example from my family is my aunt. When you went to visit her, if you came to the front door, you would have to leave out the back door. This was so she would get more visitors. If she put on a shirt backwards, she wouldn’t change it because it was bad luck. These superstitions ruled her life and dictated her habits. These superstitions were passed down from her mother’s side of the family.
God’s Answer to Freedom!
Jesus came to change these mindsets back to God’s original identity. That identity is being God’s kids! Think about this. When Jesus was baptized in water, the Holy Spirit came as a dove upon him. God spoke from heaven and said, “This is my Son, who I love; with him I am well pleased.” God called Jesus his son. Not Messiah. Not the Savior but Son! Being the Messiah and Savior was his assignment. Being his son was his position of authority and opened the door to inheritance. Jesus died and rose again from death so that you and I can become sons and daughters of God.
Our position changes from being ruled by the world and sin to becoming sons and daughters of God. We can overcome our family line handicaps. It won’t happen overnight. You may feel you are starting out ten floors below the first floor, but God has a plan! Being God’s kid changes your perspective and allows God to intervene in your daily life. Ask God to break off any mindsets that have hindered you from walking out God’s best for your life. You will be surprised how God intervenes. It isn’t always the easiest path, but the rewards are great.
Prayer
Father God, please forgive me for following the misguided paths I have been walking. Open my eyes to see Your path. Jesus, I am choosing to receive all you sacrificed for me. Open my heart to receive being God’s kid. Holy Spirit, guide me to God’s truth and wisdom. Strengthen me to walk out this path and fulfill the destiny God has for me. All because of Jesus, amen!
